Key Stage 4 (KS4) – GCSE Options (Year 9)

At Northallerton School & Sixth Form College, the Key Stage 4 options process is designed to support students in making informed choices about their GCSE subjects. The process begins in Year 9 and follows a structured timeline:

  • January:

    • Students experience taster sessions in a range of subjects to explore potential GCSE options.

    • The Options Launch Evening is held for students and parents to introduce the process and available subjects.

  • Early February:

    • Parents’ Evening provides an opportunity to discuss progress and subject suitability with teaching staff.

    • February Half Term:

    • Students submit their Options Form, indicating their preferred subjects.

  • Post-Submission:

    • Option blocks are created based on student choices and curriculum planning data.

    • Personalised pathways are considered for students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), ensuring appropriate support and subject access.

Key Stage 5 (KS5) – Sixth Form Options (Year 11)

The Key Stage 5 options process supports Year 11 students in selecting A Level and vocational courses for post-16 study:

  • December:

    • The Sixth Form Open Evening provides detailed information on available courses and progression routes.

    • The Options Form goes live for students to begin considering their choices.

    • A Year 11 Parents’ Evening is held for all students to discuss academic progress and post-16 plans.

  • Early February:

    • A targeted Parents’ Evening is held to provide additional guidance for selected students.

    • February Half Term:

    • Final submission of the KS5 Options Form.

  • Before Easter:

    • Individual interviews are conducted with students to confirm choices and discuss aspirations.

  • Post-Submission:

    • Option blocks are constructed based on student selections and curriculum planning data to maximise subject availability and timetable efficiency.
