Headteacher's Welcome
It is a privilege to welcome you to Northallerton School & Sixth Form College. As Headteacher, I am proud to lead a school in such a beautiful town and its surrounding villages — a community rich in character, ambition, and potential.
Our school is driven by high expectations and a shared commitment to delivering exceptional education for every student.
I come from a market town not unlike Northallerton, and I know first-hand the vital role a great school plays in shaping lives and strengthening communities.
Northallerton School serves a wide area, with students travelling from neighbouring villages and communities across North Yorkshire. That makes our mission even more significant: to be the very best school possible for our community. When a school succeeds, it doesn’t just impact individual students — it strengthens families and builds pride across the community.
We are proud to be a school that brings people together and helps shape a brighter future for all.
I chose to come to Northallerton because I believe in its potential. This school is on a journey to becoming the school of choice in North Yorkshire — a place where the education students receive is exemplary in every classroom, underpinned by a culture of high performance. That belief is not just aspirational; it is grounded in the progress we are already making and the dedication of our staff, students, and wider community.
I bring with me extensive leadership experience and a track record of school improvement in some of the most challenging schools in the North East of England. I’ve worked for two of the largest academy trusts in the country, where I’ve had the opportunity to learn from and support a wide range of schools. Although this is my first headship, I bring with me the very best ideas and practices to Northallerton School & Sixth Form College.
Our vision is clear: to deliver exceptional education forged with strong values, where every student is supported to succeed and thrive. We want our students to leave with the best academic outcomes they are capable of — and to leave as well-rounded individuals with strong character.
Character development is central to our ethos. I am a passionate advocate for nurturing young people to become not only academically capable but also morally grounded and socially responsible. When students are guided by values such as honesty, kindness, respect, and resilience, they grow into confident individuals who contribute positively to their communities. These values are not just taught — they are lived, forming the foundation of our school culture and shaping the way we interact, learn, and grow together.
At Northallerton School & Sixth Form College, enrichment is a vital part of our offer — whether through sport, music, drama, Duke of Edinburgh, or trips and visits both local and international. These experiences help students discover passions, build resilience, and develop leadership and teamwork skills that will serve them for life. We reward students not just for achievement, but for doing the right thing every day and contributing positively to our school community.
As part of the Arete Learning Trust, we benefit from a strong and supportive partnership that enhances every aspect of our work. I, along with my staff, feel incredibly well supported by the Trust’s central team and by fellow leaders across our partner schools. Their wealth of experience, strategic insight, and commitment to excellence provide both the rigour and encouragement needed to drive continuous improvement. Together, we are united in our mission to strive for excellence and deliver the highest standards of education for every child.
As part of the Areté Learning Trust, we are a forward-thinking and outward-facing school. We collaborate closely with our partner academies-Richmond School & Sixth Form College, Stokesley School & Sixth Form College, Ryedale School, Norton College, and Nunthorpe Academy-as well as with Broomfield Primary School, Helmsley Community Primary School, Kirkbymoorside Community Primary School, Mill Hill Primary School, and Sinnington Community Primary School.
This extensive network allows us to share best practices, pool resources, and engage in joint initiatives that benefit students and staff alike. By working collaboratively across such a diverse group of schools, we are able to offer a wealth of opportunities that inspire ambition, nurture talent, and promote academic, social, and personal growth.
Inclusivity lies at the heart of everything we do. Through our partnerships, we strive to ensure every young person has access to high-quality education, regardless of their background or starting point. By fostering a culture of mutual respect and understanding, we create an environment where everyone feels valued and supported to achieve their full potential.
Our commitment to innovation and reflection ensures that we remain responsive to the evolving needs of our students, staff, and the wider community. Together with our partners, we aim to empower every individual to thrive and contribute positively to society, now and in the future.
Best wishes,
Mr Kevin Broom
Headteacher
