EXAM INFORMATION

At Northallerton School & Sixth Form College, we run a structured programme of formal and mock examinations throughout the academic year. These assessments are essential for tracking progress, preparing for final qualifications, and ensuring students are supported appropriately.

Formal Exam Series

We operate three main formal exam series each year:

November Series

  • Who it’s for: Year 11 and Sixth Form students resitting GCSEs or completing early entries.

  • Subjects: Typically includes English Language and Mathematics.

  • Purpose: Opportunity to improve grades or complete early assessments.

January Series

  • Who it’s for: Sixth Form students taking vocational qualifications or modular exams.

  • Subjects: Includes BTEC, Cambridge Nationals, and other vocational courses.

  • Purpose: Mid-year assessments contributing to final grades or allowing for resits.

Summer Series (Main Exams)

  • Who it’s for: All students in Years 11 and 13, and some in Year 10.

  • Subjects: Full range of GCSEs, A Levels, and vocational qualifications.

  • Purpose: Final assessments for national qualifications.

Mock Exam Series

Mock exams are a vital part of our assessment strategy, helping students prepare for formal exams and allowing staff to identify support needs.

November Mocks

  • Year Groups: Year 11 and selected Sixth Form students.

  • Purpose: Early diagnostic assessment to inform intervention and revision planning.

February Mocks

  • Year Groups: Year 11 and Year 13.

  • Purpose: Final preparation ahead of the summer series; used to inform predicted grades and access arrangements.

Evidence of Normal Way of Working

To qualify for exam access arrangements (e.g. extra time, reader, scribe), students must demonstrate a consistent need through their normal way of working in lessons and assessments.

  • Mocks are used as key evidence for this.

  • Students must use any support (e.g. word processors, prompts, rest breaks) during mocks as they would in regular lessons.

  • Staff will record and review this evidence to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place for formal exams.
