Curriculum
At Northallerton School & Sixth Form College, we are proud to offer a curriculum that is both broad and ambitious, designed to support every student in achieving their full potential. Our Sixth Form provision is well-established and highly regarded, combining academic rigour with personalised support in a welcoming and mature learning environment.
Students joining our Sixth Form can choose between two main pathways: the traditional A Level route or a vocational programme at Level 3. Both options are structured to prepare students for university, apprenticeships or employment, and are delivered by experienced staff who are committed to helping students succeed.
The A Level pathway allows students to select three subjects, with the possibility of studying four in exceptional cases. These courses are assessed through final examinations at the end of Year 13 and include a wide range of subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, English Literature, Mathematics, History, Psychology and more.
Alternatively, students may opt for a vocational pathway, which includes OCR Cambridge Technical qualifications and other applied courses. These are assessed through a combination of coursework and external exams, and offer practical, career-focused learning in areas such as Business, Health & Social Care, Media, Food Science & Nutrition, and Sport.
In addition to their core subjects, students benefit from a rich programme of enrichment and support. This includes careers guidance, volunteering opportunities, work experience placements, and the chance to undertake the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which is highly valued by universities. Students who have not yet achieved a grade 4 in English or Maths GCSE are also supported through dedicated resit programmes.
Our curriculum is underpinned by a strong commitment to progression. We work closely with universities and employers to ensure students are well-prepared for life beyond Sixth Form. Many of our students go on to study at Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, while others secure competitive apprenticeships or enter the world of work with confidence and clarity.
At Northallerton, we believe that education should open doors. Our curriculum is designed not only to meet academic standards but to inspire ambition, nurture talent and equip students with the skills they need to thrive.
