Our History: Over 700 Years of Learning
Northallerton School traces its origins back to 1323, when it was founded as Northallerton Free School. It is one of the oldest educational institutions in the region, with a legacy of academic excellence and community service.
- In 1909, the historic Grammar School moved to its current site on Grammar School Lane, where parts of the original building still stand near All Saints’ Church.
- During the Second World War, the school played a vital role in the community by hosting evacuee children from Sunderland.
- In 1973, the school transitioned from a selective grammar school to a comprehensive upper school, reflecting a commitment to inclusive education.
- The 1990s saw a rebranding to Northallerton College, aligning with its broader educational mission.
- In 2015, a significant merger with Allertonshire School led to the formation of the current Northallerton School & Sixth Form College, operating across two sites: Brompton Road (Lower School) and Grammar School Lane (Senior School and Sixth Form).
- In 2021, the full school to themoved to Allertonshire site on Brompton Road. Now known as Cuthbert and Arbor.

£8.7 Million Refurbishment & Site Consolidation
In 2021, the school completed a major £8.7 million redevelopment project funded by the Department for Education (DfE). This investment enabled the full refurbishment and extension of the former Allertonshire site on Brompton Road, consolidating the school onto a single, modern campus.

Leisure Centre Access
Students benefit from direct access to the adjacent Northallerton Leisure Centre, which complements the school’s physical education and wellbeing provision. Facilities include:
